Before you arrive at UPMC
Prior to your journey
to the United States, a representative from the Center for International
Patient Relations will be assigned as your contact. This representative
will offer help in addressing a number of pretreatment concerns often
shared by international patients, including financing, being met upon
arrival in the United States, and planning your stay at UPMC and the city
of Pittsburgh. Before you travel to UPMC, you should:
- Get
a copy of all medical documentation pertaining to the procedures, tests, surgical
operations, lab work, and medical care that you have been given prior to your
UPMC treatment.
- Get
a letter of introduction from your primary care physician at home.
- Get
clearance from proper government agencies in order to travel abroad for medical
care.
- Have
a list of medications that you are currently taking -- stating the generic, or
chemical name, not the brand name.
- Obtain
an international telephone calling card.
- Obtain
a credit card that can be used in the United States, such as VISA, MasterCard,
or American Express.
- Obtain
a visa for the estimated stay abroad. Avoid getting a visitor's visa that cannot
be extended easily.
Your UPMC representative
will be able to advise you in accomplishing these tasks.
